The red carpet is the place where celebrities pose for pictures and the designers get to show their design skills. However, we all know the red carpet event is much more than that. Despite getting their dress designed by prominent designers, celebrities are prone to fashion failure. Throughout the years, we have seen several stars struggling with their dress on the red carpet.
Things don’t always turn out to be like you expect them to. Celebrities are no different. Even they have to experience fashion failures and the embarrassment that comes with them. Here is the list of more than 40 celebrities that have gone through some wardrobe malfunctions during different red carpet events.
Winnie Forsyth
Winnie Forsyth wore a yellow gown with a beautiful train to the 2013 British Academy Film Awards. She was looking stunning as always and was photographed in it. The photos came amazingly. However, the train, on the other hand, was less visible in the pictures.
The invisibility of the train had a reason associated with it. While deciding on the dress, maybe Forsyth didn't consider the wind factor. Therefore, the celebrity took it off for a simpler look when the wind came up. Nonetheless, the lack of a train wasn’t able to reduce the beauty of Forsyth and she looked equally gorgeous in the evening.
Hayden Panettiere
Hayden Panettiere has a history of attending red carpet events. But even professionals might make mistakes from time to time. Hayden Panettiere wore a beautiful ballgown at the 2014 Met Gala. The gown was beautiful and worthy of a Disney princess. She, indeed, was looking like a princess.
However, the length of the gown was a bit of a challenge. While Panettiere mainly did it right, the red carpet steps got the best of her. Fortunately, the actress handled it well and was able to take a couple of fantastic photographs on those same stairs.
Jenny McCarthy
Jenny McCarthy looked stunning at the 1997 Academy Awards. Nonetheless, there was something that appeared odd about her during the event. Otherwise, she wouldn’t be on the list. She, then, explained to US Weekly that her outfit was too small for her.
Jenny mentioned in the interview that she walked down the red carpet, went to the Vanity Fair party, and felt like a million dollars. However, throughout the evening, she kept wondering why the dress was so tight in the chest all night. It was only after she met Valentino, her event designer, that she learned that she was wearing the dress backward. It would definitely make her laugh in the times to come.
Ashley Graham
Anyone who has ever worn stilettos will tell you that they are challenging to walk in. Nonetheless, some folks make it look easy. Ashley Graham show up wearing a black dress and stilettos at one of the red carpet events and faced some issues.
With the difficulties in mind, it's no surprise that stars make mistakes from time to time. Graham, as a supermodel, is no stranger to making tough looks appear effortless. Even so, everyone was concerned about the star's stiletto getting trapped on her clothing. The good news is that she was fine and recovered quickly. Nonetheless, she didn’t let the failure turn into an embarrassment for her.
Sofia Vergara
Sofia Vergara isn't a newcomer on the red carpet. That's why you might have missed the Modern Family star's wardrobe faux pas at the Emmys in 2012.
Vergara, along with the rest of the Modern Family cast, accepted an award for Best Comedy Series. However, a backstage glimpse revealed that you often have to make last-minute alterations to glamorous appearances to avoid concerns like them breaking down the seams. It is indeed a work of precision to avoid any wardrobe malfunctions in Hollowood. Ever wondered, if all actresses fear fashion failures before going on the red carpet?
Cameron Diaz
Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu, and Cameron Diaz worked hard to promote Charlie's Angels when it first came out in 2003. Obviously, the promotion led to a few red carpet appearances. All three actresses wore matching white outfits to the film's premiere in 2003.
Fortunately, Barrymore and Liu didn’t face any embarrassing moments while Diaz tripped while crossing the street to meet some fans. A broken shoe strap is about the least Charlie's angels have had to cope with.
Nicki Minaj
Nicki Minaj has worn a variety of eye-catching clothes over the years. When things go awry, she can even change her clothing on the fly. There have undoubtedly been numerous fashion crises that have gone unnoticed over the years. All because of her handling skills.
Nicki Minaj’s gown unexpectedly flew open when she attended the MTV Music Video Awards in 2014. It surely would have been disastrous for most people. However, the actress merely caught her dress before it was too late and played the whole thing off as if nothing happened. The event was a classic example of the presence of mind Minaj has in respect to her fashion.
Lili Reinhart
Speaking of terrifying wardrobe moments that we didn't see, Lili Reinhart needed some last-minute modifications at the 2017 Teen Choice Awards. If the actress hadn’t tweeted about the disaster, we wouldn’t even know about it.
Overall, Lili Reinhart looked terrific for the occasion, and then she tweeted about the blue carpet disaster. She expressed her delight at being there, despite the fact that the waistband of her dress was kept together by two strings, one of which completely ripped while the dress was being zipped up.
Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga is the one individual who isn't afraid to wear an impractical outfit. Therefore, she was not going to let anyone down at the 2011 CFDA Fashion Awards. Nonetheless, the day was extra special for her and she needed to look memorable on the day. The singer was not only present, but she was also getting a fashion icon award.
Gaga nailed the train and extremely high shoes for all of the complicated components of this dress, only slipping for a second when her top slid down. Nonetheless, the symbol simply pulled it up and moved on, leaving people to admire her handling skills.
Zendaya
We've already touched on the difficulties of walking down the red carpet in staggeringly high shoes. It's difficult to maintain your equilibrium when you're not posing for shots and walking around. It indeed was difficult to attend a whole event in high heels. The inconvenience is one of the few things that we miss in the glamorous photos.
Zendaya wore outrageously high yellow heels to the 2016 Radio Disney Music Awards. Rumor has it that her stylist indicated that he did not intend the shoes to be worn outside. Her stylist even revealed that he was holding her up eight minutes into the trek to the carpet because her legs were collapsing.
Behati Prinsloo
Certain jobs will prepare you to deal with fashion disasters. A Victoria's Secret Angel, we assume, would have to know how to deal with a fashion faux pas. That's exactly what occurred to Behati Prinsloo and her husband Adam Levine as they walked the red carpet at the 2015 Vanity Fair Oscar Party.
Nonetheless, Behati Prinsloo's clothing appeared to be a safe bet. Unfortunately, she saw it slipping down throughout the night, but she didn't lose a beat in averting tragedy. All thanks to her dependable husband. The husband was supporting her throughout the event and both of them were seen laughing their way through the mishap.
Ben Affleck
Women's wardrobe is heavily scrutinized on the red carpet, but it doesn't mean they're the only ones who make the occasional fashion faux pas. Although it is very difficult to believe, sometimes men’s fashion could also fail. A similar incident happened with Ben Affleck.
Ben Affleck had his own red carpet debacle, albeit it could have been much worse. While his slate costume was a safe pick for the Suicide Squad premiere in 2016, He might have wished to spend a few more minutes on the buttons before leaving. The buttons kept opening up during the event. Nonetheless, a belt came as a savior for Ben at the event.
Micaela Schäefer
Fashion is an art form that appears to have no boundaries. You may even observe that some designers attempt to create new designs with traditional textiles. This indeed is a great idea and if pulled properly, it would make an item of great clothing for an event like the red carpet.
Micaela Schäefer made a statement with her distinctive appearance at the Men in Black 3 premiere in Germany. The bottom portion of the garment was composed completely of VHS tape film. As a result, the skirt was regularly blown away by the wind, but Schäefer seemed to accept the wind as part of the aesthetic and went happily with it.
Katherine Heigl
Katherine Heigl had a wonderful night at the 2010 ShoWest Awards. After all, she was there to accept the Female Star of the Year Award. She even had the perfect gown for the occasion. Undoubtedly, she was looking stunning in the dress.
Everything was going perfectly for Katherine until the shoulder strap broke. Fortunately, the singer was able to identify the problem with the assistance of host Billy Bush. This allowed her to continue her speech and accept the prize without being interrupted for too long by the unexpected issue. In the end, we can say, everything worked out well for her.
Mario Lopez
If you find yourself in an embarrassing situation, you may discover that laughing about it helps. At the very least, it worked out well for Mario Lopez. He was looking his best in a black shirt and grey suit until the mishap happened. However, instead of getting embarrassed, he handled the situation like a pro and was smiling about it.
Mario had some last-minute suit troubles on his way to a red carpet function. They were also difficult to ignore. His pants were too tight that it was torn up. Fortunately, he was wearing undies beneath it. So the actor decided to own the issue, tweeting about it with the hashtags #PantsTooTight and #Undies to make light of the bad circumstance.
Rihanna
Rihanna stunned everyone at the Ocean's 8 premieres. The artist and actress wore a Poiret gown with eye-catching metallic gold draped down one shoulder to the event. She was looking remarkable.
Unfortunately, it was Rihanna’s slipping sleeve that created so much grief. Nothing bad happened, but the sleeve kept trying to fall, leaving her to pull it back up between photographs. Nonetheless, it didn’t lead her to stop getting clicked. The good news is that she escaped tragedy and grabbed a few good photos as well.
Katy Perry
Sometimes you just have to accept what occurs to an outfit since there is nothing you can do. Katy Perry was in this position at the 2017 Academy Awards. She was wearing a stunning rust-colored gown and was beautiful as always.
Jean Paul Gaultier's garment, which Katy wore for the night, was inspired by old pieces. The gown made it across the red carpet, but during the Vanity Fair afterparty, the seam on the drop-waist ripped. Perry managed to stay covered, but her costly gown was ruined. There was nothing that could’ve been done. We just hope her designer was able to fic the gown after the event.
Dakota Johnson
To her credit, Dakota Johnson walked the red carpet at the People's Choice Awards in 2016. The aforementioned wardrobe malfunction occurred on stage. Ironically, the actress was awarded Favorite Dramatic Movie Actress for her performance in 50 Shades of Grey when her top began to unravel.
Fortunately, actress Leslie Mann snatched it up just in time. Johnson soon made a joke about what had happened, adding that if the top had come off, it wasn't anything out of the ordinary. She jokingly said that people have already seen so much of her in movies that nothing will be new for them.
Bella Hadid
Bella and Gigi Hadid are supermodel sisters who have achieved considerable celebrity throughout the years. So neither is unfamiliar with dealing with a minor fashion faux pas.
The 2016 Cannes Film Festival presented significant difficulties for Bella Hadid. She wore a high-slit crimson gown and shoes for a very traditional appearance. While the supermodel managed to pull it off, the train was deceptively difficult to control. She was seen adjusting her train throughout the event. Nonetheless, she was doing it with a lovely smile on her face.
Lily-Rose Depp
In her own right, Lily-Rose Depp is a great actor. She was celebrating the premiere of the film named The King at the red carpet gathering. Due to an unexpected natural phenomenon, she could’ve faced a big fashion disaster but she managed to handle the situation well.
The actress wore a gown from Chanel's 2020 collection to the event. It had a halter neckline with a ruffled pattern. One especially strong gust of wind tried to blow her top out of place, but the actress simply laughed it off and repositioned it for the next shot.
Cardi B
Cardi B's dress sense has gained her a lot of attention throughout the years. In 2018, she attended a show in Calibash and sang "La Modelo."
The garment was beautiful and had a classic design. However, it had a big flaw. The garment was clearly seen once the rapper was on the red carpet and beneath the stage lights. Before that time, she didn’t know that the dress she was given was see-through. Nonetheless, she pulled the dress like a professional. Later that night, Cardi B posted on her social media handle that she enjoyed the event properly and was considered the event LIT, however, she didn’t know that her dress was a see-through one.
Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian is well-known for her fashion sense, so it's no surprise that she didn't hold back in a vintage Versace gown at the premiere of The Cher Show. She was looking her best in the grey gown.
The gown had a halter top that kept the back open. The only issue was that the actress over-adjusted her dress on the red carpet, exposing a portion of her chest. Kardashian didn't hesitate to laugh it off, even censoring it with a Cher GIF on Instagram. She sure has the guts to handle any controversy properly.
Emily Ratajkowski
A train on a gown can greatly enhance the design. However, the longer your dress, the more difficult it will be to ensure that you are conscious of it throughout the night. Unless you are Emily Ratajkowski, the long train could make the night less enjoyable.
As a supermodel, Emily Ratajkowski is no stranger to tough clothing. As a result, she probably handled the challenge of her gold gown at the 2017 Golden Globes better than most. Nonetheless, the train was clearly in the way in some of the photographs.
Chloë Grace Moretz
Chloe Grace Moretz was on Watch What Happens Live when she experienced a wardrobe malfunction. Fortunately, unless she turned around, you couldn't see it. The diva wore a stylish velvet top, but it didn't appear to have the stretch she required.
One overextension appears to have ripped the seam and torn the back of the sleeve. To be honest, if the dress had to tear, the back shoulder — which was only seen when she signed autographs — was nothing compared to the disasters that the other actresses have faced during the red carpet event.
Anne Hathaway
Like many others, you could have overlooked Anne Hathaway's wardrobe disaster at the Met Gala. On The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, she eventually revealed the story herself. It was the biggest disaster for Anne until then and fortunately, it didn’t happen on the red carpet.
Anne explained that she went as a guest of Calvin Klein and Francisco Costa once. She was just a block away from the Met when she sneezed. To her wonder, unfortunately, her dress split open. They had to stop to look for a seamstress to assist, and as a result, Hathaway was the second-to-last person to arrive.
Hailee Steinfeld
Some red carpet fashion faux pas captivates everyone's attention. Others may fly beneath the radar and you may not be aware of them until much later.
Hailee Steinfeld was in the latter category at the 2017 Oscars. The actress looked lovely in a floral gown that cascaded down the red carpet and pooled at her feet. If you look closely, you may notice a small tear that the star managed to conceal almost completely. It was indeed a smart move.
Minnie Driver
As a dynamic performer, you must be able to think rapidly on your feet. It also helps with red carpet wardrobe malfunctions. Minnie Driver attended the Oscars in 1998 and wore a red gown that felt suitable given that she would be strolling the red carpet.
The garment began to fall off after a while, but Driver was undeterred. She simply wrapped the shawl she was carrying around her shoulders, allowing the faux fur to conceal her in a beautiful way. The response was fast as well as good.
Laura Govan
Laura Govan went for a playful style on the red carpet in her patterned party dress. She had many of the same issues as Michelle Rodriguez in the strapless gown. Carrying a strapless gown, thus, is not an easy task as it requires a lot of attention.
The actress suddenly discovered that her party gown was not kept in place. She had no other option but to spend a significant amount of time on the red carpet holding the dress in place or pulling it up. Even though it wasn't the most comfortable option, the dress looked wonderful.
Janet Jackson
We'd be foolish to discuss fashion disasters without including Janet Jackson's unfavorable predicament at Super Bowl XXXVIII. The singer was scheduled to perform during the halftime show alongside Justin Timberlake. She faced her fashion failure during her performance. However, neither her designer nor she was responsible for the failure this time.
Timberlake caused the wardrobe malfunction by pulling the cloth pocket over the right side of Jackson's shirt during the performance. She explained in an interview that Timberlake was just supposed to remove her bustier and leave her bra in place for coverage. Nonetheless, she understands that he didn’t do it on purpose and that everything that happened was completely unintentional.
Ariel Winter
Ariel Winter is another Modern Family cast member who is no stranger to award events. She stole the show on the Emmys red carpet in 2017. She chose a beautiful grey-colored gown for the event.
The gown in question had a shimmering pattern and a pair of high slits to contribute to the overall look. The celebrity avoided anything too terrible, but it wasn't without work. It appears that controlling the outfit was more challenging than anyone anticipated. She was adjusting her outfit throughout the event. It was a minor but yet a fashion failure.
Margot Robbie
Margot Robbie has had a spectacular climb to prominence thanks to a slew of outstanding roles throughout the years. She was celebrating the release of I, Tonya at the time of the red carpet event.
Margot Robbie, who plays the titular Tonya Harding, was the highlight of the Australian premiere. The actress opted for a simple pale pink silk gown with a deep neckline. The actress didn’t expect that neckline to be that long. It was this neckline that had the actress altering her gown all night. She was constantly seen adjusting her neckline and covering it using her hands.
Beyoncé
Beyoncé has an uncanny ability to make everything she does appear effortless. In truth, even something as basic as walking down the red carpet may be a challenge. We have seen so with so many actresses. If you are not experienced then something as easy as walking can prove to be full of effort on the red carpet.
At the 2011 Met Gala, a tight mermaid costume of Beyoncé surely turned heads. However, mobility was the cost of the aesthetic. When it came time to shift between shots, Beyonce had her husband and fellow celebrity Jay-Z on her side to assist her.
Kaitlyn Bristowe
Fans were not left wondering what happened when Kaitlyn Bristowe had to think quickly on the red carpet. She kept followers up to date on the saga throughout the 2018 Emmys.
The actress wore a black gown at the event. Everything would have been perfect if the dress hadn't ripped across the back at the zipper. She explained that it was tough for her to stand and stay decent with the tear. Fortunately, a lovely couple came to her rescue. They were kind enough to lend her a jacket. The jacket was able to cover up her tear and allowed her to enjoy the limelight of the day.
Chrissy Teigen
Chrissy Teigan built her brand on a sympathetic persona. Therefore, it's no surprise that she spoke out to followers about her unpleasant situation following a red carpet wardrobe mishap. The mishap gave her several unwanted attention.
Teigen wore a white gown with a slit up the front to one function. But, as chance would have it, that slit grew about five inches higher over the night. Teigen posted a photo of herself hiding the fashion faux pas under her purse in an attempt to diffuse the matter.
Lady Victoria Hervey
Lady Victoria Hervey is a multi-award winner. She has lots of red carpet experience thanks to her socialite status and acting and modeling professions. Nonetheless, it was extremely obvious that she would be here on the list. With her mishap skills, she proved why she is the best.
Hervey was given a special challenge during the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. Her low-cut and high-slit gown had held up well as she strutted and posed down the red carpet. Unfortunately, a gust of wind tried to break everything apart. She handled it with only a slight stumbling.
Emma Stone
Trains on dresses are beautiful, but they can be more difficult to sew than you might think. That isn't always reserved for the star in the gown. This time, because of Emma’s fashion, someone else slipped. However, the incident, overall, was not so bad.
In her Dior suit and dress ensemble, Emma Stone had no issue managing her train on the red carpet. Everything was good until Stone and the rest of the Birdman cast jumped onstage to accept a Best Ensemble prize. Naomi Watts slipped on Stone's train, but Edward Norton caught her before she fell.
Elisabetta Canalis
No one would have known that Elisabetta Canalis had a dress malfunction before the 2010 Oscars, which might have spelled tragedy. The zipper on Canalis' dress broke while she was getting dressed. She was fortunate that it didn’t break during the event.
Rather than enlisting Hollywood assistance, the matter was easily addressed when Canalis' then-boyfriend, George Clooney, stepped in at the last minute to sew the zipper back into place. He indeed was the man of her dreams who came to her rescue in her time of need.
Beyoncé Again
Beyonce was requested to perform at the 2005 Academy Awards before her mermaid gown at the Met Gala. This entailed several quick and complete wardrobe changes. Quick changes and urgency are enough to ruin a perfectly good moment.
With few minutes to prepare, the actress didn't fully strap one of her heels before performing "Learn to Be Lonely" from The Phantom of the Opera. The shoe fell off completely during the performance but her legs remained covered in the dress, so the audience was unaware. Beyonce must’ve been exhausted by the number of accidents that happen to her during such events.
Jennifer Lawrence
Jennifer Lawrence isn't scared to reveal her more human side. That means she'll quickly own up to and laugh off a red carpet gaffe. That is precisely what occurred at the 2011 SAG Awards. The celebrity caught everyone's eye in a floor-length bright pink gown.
The only problem was that Jennifer also drew attention when she tripped over her dress, forcing her to fall. In typical J-Law form, she laughed it off and resumed posing for the photographers. She might be the only actress who can handle embarrassing situations in such cool and fun ways.
Another One for Jennifer Lawrence
Jennifer Lawrence, as previously stated, is unfazed by a relatable red carpet gaffe. To be fair, she did walk the red carpet in a gown for her first Oscar acceptance speech. Accepting the award was what made things difficult. On her way up the stairs, the Best Actress nominee stumbled on the hem of her gown, causing her to fall.
Jennifer was asked in an interview what went through her head when she fell down while walking up on an Oscar stage to receive an award. She answered the question with the same coolness as she handled the situation after falling down. She said that she can’t say what went through her head as it was a bad word that starts with “F”.
Sarah Hyland
Sarah Hyland has been seen on red carpets for quite some time. The actress chose a crimson gown with a cutaway for her look at the 2017 Emmy Awards. The main issue was that when there's a cutout in a dress, you probably hope it doesn't jeopardize the dress's ability to stay on.
However, it appears like Hyland was taken by surprise when the bottom section of her dress refused to stay in place. It was slightly loose and was sliding down, displaying her Spanx. As a result, she had to constantly adjust the band. Later, she even made fun of the issue on Instagram.
Mariah Carey
Cinderella's story is well-known. In one scenario, her true love finds her after the ball by losing a shoe. Mariah Carey had her own Cinderella moment when she changed her glass slippers for a pair of reasonably high Louboutins.
However, it appears like the added height would make this slip even more terrifying, but Carey is an expert and didn't let the stumble deter her for long. When the shoe slipped from her legs, she handled the situation as if nothing happened. She wore her heels again and went on to attend the event happily.
Michelle Rodriguez
Strapless dresses are really appealing. They are, however, not always simple to keep up with because they lack support straps. Gravity is a phenomenon that pulls everything down along with a strapless dress. One has no other option but to keep adjusting the seam to prevent any revealing.
Lack of support straps was exactly the issue Michelle Rodriguez had when she walked out for the sixth installment of The Fast and Furious franchise. It didn't take long to figure out what was wrong: the dress was sliding down. Despite having to hold her dress up for most of the night, Rodriquez managed to get some fantastic shots.
Emma Roberts
Emma Roberts has developed all of the acting skills you'd expect from a member of this famous family. As a result, there are numerous premieres where fans can catch her.
The actress was at the premiere of The Blackcoat's Daughter when her purple gown began to degrade. In this image, it's easy to see that one sleeve is split down the side. She even mentioned the mishap in an interview. She accepted that she was troubled with the slipping down of the sleeves as it was almost revealing her body.
Kendall Jenner
Kendall Jenner wore a gorgeous gown to the 2016 MTV Movie Awards. People were particularly taken by the stunning lace-up shoes she wore with the dress. Her look was gorgeous and she was looking stunning with the black dress and matching lace-up shoes.
The only problem was that those stilettos refused to stay laced, despite the fact that it took two assistants to get them on at all. Her assistants had to redo the knots between shots. In a Snapchat video of Jenner trying to get the sandals off at the end of the night, Gigi Hadid gave viewers a behind-the-scenes glimpse.
